Delhi High Court has issued a notice to Delhi Police on Umar Khalid’s regular and interim bail pleas. The case relates to the alleged larger conspiracy behind the 2020 North East Delhi riots. Umar Khalid faces charges under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act in this matter.
The court scheduled the next hearing for 27 August. During this hearing, the court will also hear co-accused Sharjeel Imam’s bail plea. Meanwhile, Umar Khalid challenged the trial court order that rejected his bail request.
Trial Court Had Rejected Bail Plea Earlier
Umar Khalid approached the High Court after the lower court dismissed his bail application. His bail plea has already faced rejection three times from the trial court.
Earlier, on 4 July 2026, the trial court rejected bail pleas of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam. The court stated that a larger Supreme Court bench was examining the legal issue related to granting bail in UAPA cases.
The issue concerns whether prolonged trial delays can become a reason for granting bail. Therefore, the trial court said it could not provide bail only on that ground until the Supreme Court delivers its final decision.
