One Mobile Number, Two iPhones? Apple’s New Feature Changes How You Use Multiple Devices

Apple’s iPhone Handoff feature in iOS 27 allows users to connect two iPhones with one mobile number and use calls and messages across devices.

Apple has introduced a useful feature for users owning two iPhones. The iPhone Handoff feature in iOS 27 allows one mobile number on two devices. Therefore, users can avoid repeatedly changing SIM or eSIM connections. They also do not need separate mobile plans for both phones.

Through this feature, two iPhones connect with the same number. After setup, both devices can make calls and send messages.

Apple designed this option for people who regularly switch between two iPhones. Moreover, users only need to unlock their preferred device.

The selected iPhone automatically activates through Handoff. Consequently, users can access calls and messages using the same number.

How does iPhone Handoff work and how to set it up?

To use iPhone Handoff, both devices must run iOS 27 or a newer version. Additionally, both iPhones should connect to the same Wi-Fi network. Users also need the same Apple Account login for iCloud, FaceTime, and iMessage. During setup, one device becomes Primary while another becomes Secondary.

The Primary iPhone keeps the main eSIM and carrier settings. However, supported carriers may allow both devices to use their own eSIM. For setup, users should keep both iPhones nearby. First, unlock either device and open Settings.

Next, visit Cellular and select Set Up Cellular, Add eSIM, or iPhone Handoff. Afterward, choose “Use Number on This iPhone and Another” and follow instructions.

Once activated, users can assign one phone as the Primary iPhone. Also, a small notification appears near the Dynamic Island area.

Carrier support and limitations of iPhone Handoff

iPhone Handoff depends on mobile carrier support along with the phone feature. Currently, reports mention support from T-Mobile in America. Furthermore, Telekom in Germany has also confirmed support for this feature. In America, T-Mobile charges an additional $5 monthly fee.

However, users in India need to separately check carrier availability for this service. This feature can help people using two iPhones for different purposes. For example, users can keep an older iPhone during travel after buying a new device. Similarly, people carrying separate personal and office iPhones can use one number across both phones.

However, the feature has some restrictions. Apple Watch does not automatically switch to another iPhone.

Additionally, some Wallet items, including IDs and passes, may not appear on both devices.
