Supreme Court Questions Pellet Gun Rules, Says Complete Ban May Not Be Possible

The Supreme Court sought a response from the Centre on pellet gun usage protocols while examining demands seeking a complete ban.

Supreme Court Seeks Centre Response On Pellet Gun Protocol

The Supreme Court on Thursday, July 30, sought a response from the Centre regarding pellet gun usage rules. The court examined a demand seeking a complete ban on pellet gun use against crowds. However, the bench indicated that a total ban may not happen. The court said it would consider the Standard Operating Procedure related to pellet gun usage.

During the hearing, the court reviewed a petition filed by two injured people. Their lawyer requested restrictions on pellet gun use during crowd control situations. The Supreme Court observed that existing security guidelines allow pellet guns according to circumstances.

Court Says Petition Must Challenge Existing Guidelines

The Supreme Court told the petitioners that they must challenge the current rules if they want changes. The court noted that their plea directly sought a complete ban without challenging the existing protocol.

Meanwhile, lawyer Vrinda Grover told the court that authorities used metal pellets instead of rubber pellets. She argued that the use of metal pellets in such situations should stop.

Chief Justice Mentions New Protocol Framework

The Supreme Court clarified that it was not rejecting the concerns raised before it. However, the court said the petition must follow the proper legal process.

Additionally, Chief Justice Surya Kant said the court would also work on creating protocols. The bench indicated that it would examine the issue while considering safety requirements and usage standards.
