Jharkhand Student Protest Takes New Turn As Devendra Nath Mahato Ends Hunger Strike

Devendra Nath Mahato ended his hunger strike after a video call with Sonam Wangchuk, while students continued their JPSC and JSSC protests.

Devendra Nath Mahato ended his hunger strike after speaking with Sonam Wangchuk through video call. He consumed water following Wangchuk’s request. Mahato had protested against alleged irregularities in JPSC examinations. He continued the hunger strike for four days without food and water. Initially, Mahato demanded Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s resignation. However, he ended the strike after receiving Wangchuk’s appeal.

Mahato explained that he accepted water because of Wangchuk’s request. The hunger strike had entered its fourth day before ending.

Sonam Wangchuk extends support to Jharkhand students

Students protesting in Jharkhand received support from social activist Sonam Wangchuk. Devendra Nath Mahato shared this information. Mahato leads the Ranchi movement. A student said they follow Sonam’s path during the ongoing protest. The student added that they would begin hunger strikes if authorities fail to accept their demands soon.

Meanwhile, Wangchuk’s support came before students planned a major assembly march. Students announced an assembly protest on August 7.

A student said they held discussions with Wangchuk. They also planned another conversation through video call.

JPSC and JSSC protests continue for 12th day

Students continued their demonstrations over alleged irregularities in JPSC and JSSC exams. The protest reached its 12th day. Student leader Jeevan Kumar said the movement completed twelve days. He added that state Congress leaders and national student wing leaders may join. Furthermore, the core committee planned discussions about a “Tiranga March”. Five students had started hunger strikes from the previous evening.

The students announced another major action on August 10. They plan to surround the assembly during the session.
