As West Worries Over Hormuz, India-Russia Deals Gain Momentum in Delhi

While Western ships face trouble near Hormuz, India strengthens ties with Russia through key defence, energy, and trade discussions in Delhi.

Western countries including Britain remain concerned over the Strait of Hormuz as several of their ships remain stuck. Meanwhile, India and Russia prepare for important agreements in New Delhi during a high-level diplomatic visit.

Manturov’s Visit and Key Discussions

Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov arrived in New Delhi on Thursday morning for crucial talks. Moreover, he will discuss defence, energy, trade, and multiple bilateral issues during this important visit.

During his stay, Manturov will hold talks with External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar. Additionally, he will participate in several bilateral meetings focused on strengthening relations between both nations.

Focus on Strengthening Bilateral Relations

According to officials, this visit aims to further strengthen ties between India and Russia significantly. Furthermore, discussions will especially focus on security and defence cooperation between both countries.

Meetings with Top Indian Leaders

During the visit, Manturov will also meet National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Moreover, these discussions will centre on cooperation in defence, security, energy, and trade sectors.

Background Diplomatic Engagements

Before this visit, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko in New Delhi on March 30. Additionally, both sides reviewed current bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and global developments.

Push for Economic Cooperation

Both countries also reviewed progress on decisions taken during the India-Russia summit held in New Delhi last December. Furthermore, that summit focused strongly on increasing economic cooperation between the two nations.

US Attempt and Outcome

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump attempted to create differences between India and Russia. However, that effort did not succeed, while he imposed extra tariffs on India for purchasing Russian oil.

Additionally, this move aimed to reduce India’s engagement with Russia’s energy sector. Therefore, US policymakers believed this could help resolve the Ukraine crisis.

What Lies Ahead

As global tensions rise, India continues strengthening strategic ties with Russia through active diplomatic engagement. Therefore, upcoming agreements may further deepen cooperation across defence, energy, and trade sectors.
