Delhi Police Explains Plainclothes Deployment Strategy
Delhi Police Deputy Commissioner Sachin Sharma stated in the affidavit that officers were intentionally placed among the crowd. He explained that the deployment followed a planned strategy. According to the police, personnel from the Special Branch and Crime Branch joined the gathering in plain clothes.
The police defended this approach and called it a recognised crowd-control method. The force said officials had used similar tactics earlier during major gatherings. According to Delhi Police, such deployment does not represent an unusual practice.
The police also responded to questions regarding sticks with nails. Officials said they noticed such an item at only one location. According to the police, protesters carried the nailed stick themselves. They suggested it may have been brought with a flag attached to it.
Police Shares Details About Injuries and Complaints
During the protest, plainclothes personnel reportedly used batons against demonstrators. Delhi Police stated that around 200 protesters suffered injuries during the incident. Meanwhile, nearly 250 police personnel also sustained injuries.
The police argued that using batons to control crowds was not wrong. Officials said such action becomes necessary during situations requiring crowd management.
Complaints against plainclothes personnel reached the Human Rights Commission. Additionally, petitioners raised the issue before the Supreme Court. The petitioners alleged that these personnel worsened the situation during the protest.
