Wednesday morning brought devastating tragedy to Delhi’s Palam neighbourhood. Furthermore, a four-storey building near Palam metro station caught fire suddenly. Additionally, nine members of the same family died in the fast-spreading blaze. Moreover, one story from inside the burning building captured every heart across India. Himanshi, just 22 years old, chose to stay behind with her 70-year-old mother Lado Kashyap. Consequently, rescuers later found both their bodies lying next to each other. Therefore, Himanshi’s final act of love became the most powerful moment of this devastating tragedy.
How the Fire Trapped the Family
Lado and Himanshi lived together on the second floor of the building. Furthermore, the fire started from the lower floors and spread rapidly upward. Additionally, Lado could not climb to the upper floors to escape the flames. Moreover, seeing her mother trapped, Himanshi made an immediate and irreversible decision. She stayed behind instead of escaping with other family members above. Consequently, both women ran into a bathroom seeking temporary shelter from the spreading fire. Therefore, what began as a desperate survival attempt quickly became an impossible situation.
Burning cosmetics and plastic material inside the building fuelled the fire’s ferocious intensity. Furthermore, the flames engulfed even the bathroom where both women had taken shelter. Additionally, Himanshi continued trying to drag her mother toward safety until her very last moments. Moreover, other family members had already reached upper floors desperately shouting for help. Consequently, Himanshi faced the fire alone with her mother without any outside assistance reaching them. Furthermore, rescuers identified Himanshi’s body only through the ring she wore on her finger. Therefore, the ring became the final identifier of a young woman who chose love over survival.
Nine Members of One Family Gone
The fire claimed nine lives from a single family in one devastating morning. Furthermore, the dead include Lado’s sons Pravesh, 33, and Kamal, 39. Additionally, Kamal’s wife Ashu, 35, and their three daughters aged 15, six, and three also died. Moreover, the couple’s other daughter-in-law Deepika, 28, also lost her life in the fire. Consequently, one family lost nine members in a single tragic morning. Furthermore, two other sons, Anil and Sachin — survived by jumping from the building. Additionally, both men currently receive treatment at a nearby hospital for injuries sustained during their escape.
Hydraulic Ladder Failure Raises Serious Questions
Eyewitnesses at the scene raised serious concerns about the fire department’s response. Furthermore, they stated that the first hydraulic crane’s ladder completely failed to deploy. Additionally, a second crane took nearly an hour to arrive at the burning building. Moreover, a firefighter confirmed that the first ladder proved too short for an effective rescue. Consequently, by the time proper equipment arrived, thick smoke had already engulfed the upper floors completely. Furthermore, local market association general secretary Mukesh Verma attempted to break through the ground-level shutter. Additionally, intense smoke and flames prevented any meaningful help from reaching the trapped family members above.
Political Blame Game Begins
Both the Aam Aadmi Party and the ruling BJP immediately criticised each other over the tragedy. Furthermore, the hydraulic ladder failure became the central point of political contention between both parties. Additionally, neighbours confirmed that Lado rarely stepped outside her home before the tragedy struck. Moreover, her husband Rajendra was away in Goa on the day of the devastating fire. Consequently, he returned to find nine members of his family gone in a single morning. Therefore, beyond the political arguments, Delhi’s Palam fire leaves behind one unforgettable image, a 22-year-old daughter who refused to leave her mother’s side even as the flames closed in around them both.
