Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on his 125th birthday. He described Mukherjee as a nation-builder committed to India’s unity, integrity, and development. Modi emphasized that Mukherjee’s greatest ideal was safeguarding India’s sovereignty.

Connection with Article 370 repeal

PM Modi noted that repealing Articles 370 and 35A in 2019 reflected the highest tribute to Mukherjee’s sacrifice and vision. He highlighted Mukherjee’s unwavering dedication to national principles above personal convenience or positions.

Academic and public service foundation

Before joining the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, Mukherjee worked as a chemistry professor in Uttar Pradesh. Emergency detention in 1975 led him to leave teaching and commit fully to public service.

Role in RSS and VHP

After release, Mukherjee became a full-time Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh activist. Later, he held senior roles in the Vishva Hindu Parishad, strengthening his organizational expertise.

Contribution to Ram Janmabhoomi movement

Mukherjee collected legal documents and evidence supporting the Hindu side during litigation over Ram temple disputes. He collaborated closely with senior VHP leaders and participated in multiple movement campaigns.

Educational and industrial reforms

PM Modi recalled Mukherjee’s early appointment as Calcutta University Vice-Chancellor, promotion of research, libraries, agricultural studies, and student welfare. As India’s first Industry and Supply Minister, he laid foundations for modern initiatives like Damodar Valley Corporation and Sindri Fertilizer Plant.

Principled political career

Modi emphasized that Mukherjee valued principles over posts, joining Nehru’s cabinet only for national collaboration. He opposed restrictions on free expression and highlighted concerns during the Emergency.

Humanitarian efforts and youth message

PM Modi remembered Mukherjee’s relief efforts during Bengal famine and Medinipur cyclone. He urged youth to pursue work diligently and uphold Mukherjee’s vision for a strong, united, compassionate India.
