CJI Suryakant expressed his joy over the massive voter turnout in Bengal’s first-phase elections. While the Supreme Court was hearing petitions, he remarked on the importance of voting.
These petitions came from 71 individuals who were removed from the voter list after the SIRO process. Their case is currently under review by the appellate tribunal.
Over 92% Voter Turnout in Bengal
On April 23, 2026, the first-phase Bengal elections saw an impressive turnout of 92%. CJI Suryakant acknowledged the enthusiasm of voters, calling it essential for strengthening democracy.
Updates on Voter List Appeals
CJI Suryakant also shared important updates regarding the voter list. He mentioned that the Calcutta High Court created 19 appellate tribunals. These tribunals are led by former Chief Justices and judges. They review appeals from people excluded from the voter list.
