Bargi Dam Accident: Death Couldn’t Separate Mother and Child, 12 Hours in a Tight Embrace Inside Sunken Cruise

The tragic rescue at Jabalpur’s Bargi Dam where a mother and her child were found holding each other even after death

The Bargi Dam cruise accident has transformed from a mere mishap into a horrifying human tragedy. When Agra’s diving team arrived to carry out the rescue operation on Friday, they encountered a scene that left even the toughest divers in tears.

As the team ventured into the submerged cruise wreckage, they discovered the body of a mother tightly holding her young child. Despite being submerged in the depths for hours, the woman’s grip remained unbroken. For nearly 12 hours, she had kept her child pressed to her chest as they both drowned together.

One member of the rescue team explained the difficulty they faced in retrieving the mother’s body. The conditions inside the wreckage were nearly impossible, with zero visibility. The team had to carefully maneuver between twisted metal rods and broken structures. Finally, they reached the mother and child, whose bodies were locked in a painful yet emotional embrace.

Agra Diving Team Faces Dangerous Conditions

The Agra paramilitary diving team, tasked with this emotionally and physically challenging operation, described their mission as nothing short of a trial by fire. The cruise structure had completely collapsed, leaving narrow pathways filled with debris. One diver even got trapped at one point due to the wreckage.

To reach the trapped bodies, the divers had to use hammers to break through the debris. Despite the risks, the team pushed forward, determined to save any lives they could, even as the wreckage’s sharp, jagged edges posed an ongoing threat to their safety.

Safety Lapses and Survivors’ Accounts

Delhi-based survivor Sangeeta Kori shed light on the critical safety lapses aboard the cruise. She revealed that when a storm hit around 6 pm, no one on board was wearing a life jacket. The life jackets had not been distributed earlier, and only after the water began flooding the cruise did the crew break into a storage room to get them. By then, the cruise had already capsized.

Sangeeta also highlighted that the cruise’s driver had ignored warnings from locals about the approaching storm. This negligence, coupled with the lack of safety equipment, has led to a tragic loss of life.

Rescue Operation Update: 9 Bodies Found, 6 Still Missing

As of Friday evening, the teams had recovered 9 bodies from the wreckage. However, 6 people are still missing. Both the Army and NDRF have joined the effort, using hydraulic machines and gas cutters to carefully slice through the damaged cruise. The operation remains ongoing, with efforts to clear the wreckage and find the remaining victims.

Madhya Pradesh ministers Rakesh Singh and Dharmendra Lodhi are present at the site, overseeing the operation and providing support to the rescuers.

The Emotional Impact of the Bargi Dam Accident

The aftermath of the Bargi Dam cruise disaster has left families devastated and the community shaken. Rescuers have not only faced dangerous conditions in their search for bodies but have also witnessed scenes of unimaginable grief. The image of a mother and child holding each other even in death has become a heartbreaking symbol of the human cost of this tragedy.
