Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk has been on a hunger strike for 23 consecutive days and announced conditional plans to end it on 20 July, emphasizing governmental accountability for recent education system failures and assurances from MPs to raise the matter in Parliament. He shared a handwritten note from Safdarjung Hospital, alleging illegal confinement that restricted his movement, speech, and communication freedoms. Wangchuk stated, “Dear friends and supporters, as previously informed, I will end my hunger strike on 20 July if the government accepts responsibility for educational failures or MPs guarantee raising the issue in Parliament.”
Three Conditions Set by Wangchuk
Firstly, the government must acknowledge recent educational lapses, including paper leaks, and assume responsibility for corrective actions. Secondly, MPs and leaders from the CJP must commit to formally raising the issue in Parliament to ensure accountability. Thirdly, if his health or other circumstances prevent compliance with the above conditions, MPs and leaders must personally meet him in hospital to provide assurances, fulfilling the requirements for ending the strike.

Pre-March Protest and CJP Mobilization
On Monday, prior to the “Chalo Parliament” march organized by CJP, thousands gathered at Jantar-Mantar, intensifying protest pressure. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke called for overnight dharna, while Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali Angmo, assured that if political leaders commit to addressing education accountability in Parliament, Wangchuk would conclude his strike. Protesters demand resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, citing NEET paper leaks and student suicides. Delhi Police stated they would not permit the proposed march to Parliament, confirming on X that no permissions were requested or granted for 20 July 2026.
