India Defence Production Hits Record ₹1.78 Lakh Crore, Doubles in 5 Years Amid Major Growth Push

India’s defence output reaches historic high in 2025–26 as government highlights self-reliance, rapid expansion, and major security transformation

India’s defence production has reached a historic milestone in the 2025–2026 financial year. The Ministry of Defence announced the figure on Wednesday, highlighting record national growth. Meanwhile, output touched ₹1.78 lakh crore, marking the highest level ever recorded.
Additionally, the sector showed strong expansion compared to previous financial years.

Strong Growth Compared to Previous Years

Defence production stood at ₹1.54 lakh crore in the previous financial year.
Consequently, the latest figure reflects a 15.6 percent increase year-on-year. Furthermore, in 2020–2021, production remained at ₹84,643 crore. This shows a massive 110 percent rise over five years.

Additionally, compared to 2013–2014’s ₹43,746 crore, output has grown nearly four times.
Therefore, the data highlights consistent long-term expansion in defence manufacturing.

PSU and Private Sector Contribution Expands

Public sector units and other PSUs contributed nearly 76 percent of total production. Meanwhile, the private sector accounted for 24 percent of output. Moreover, private participation increased from 22 percent to 25 percent in the latest year.
This shift reflects gradual strengthening of private industry involvement in defence manufacturing.

Leadership Highlights Self-Reliance Vision

Prime Minister Narendra Modi credited the growth to innovation and self-reliance initiatives. He stated that defence capabilities have transformed significantly over the past decade.
Additionally, he highlighted advancements in technology and indigenous manufacturing.

Furthermore, he noted major progress achieved in the last 12 years. This progress reflects a stronger focus on national capability building.

Defence Minister Highlights Strategic Transformation

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized major changes in national security systems. He pointed to a zero tolerance policy against terrorism under current leadership. Moreover, he referenced surgical strikes, Balakot, and Operation Sindoor.

These actions, according to him, sent a strong message on sovereignty protection. Additionally, he highlighted improved readiness across land, sea, air, cyber, and space domains.
He further stated that India has become stronger, self-reliant, and more confident globally.
