Sonia Gandhi Offers TMC Merger to Mamata Banerjee, Promises National Vice President Role

After TMC’s setback in West Bengal, Sonia Gandhi proposes merger with Congress, promising top leadership for Mamata and Abhishek Banerjee.

TMC suffered a heavy defeat in the West Bengal assembly elections. Fifty-eight out of eighty legislators formed a separate group. Subsequently, around twenty TMC MPs also separated in Delhi, signaling a severe party fragmentation.

Sonia Gandhi Extends Merger Proposal

Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi offered TMC President Mamata Banerjee a full party merger with Congress. Sources revealed Sonia promised Mamata the position of national vice president if she agreed to merge TMC.

Additionally, Mamata’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, would receive the position of party general secretary.

Strategic Reasoning Behind the Offer

Sonia suggested the merger as a defensive measure against BJP’s political pressure in West Bengal. She warned that otherwise, TMC could face similar harassment like AAP, compounded by internal dissent against Abhishek Banerjee.

Mamata Considers the Proposal

Sonia personally called Mamata Banerjee to discuss the proposal. Sources told ABP News that Mamata requested a few days to consider this strategic merger offer.
