The Election Commission of India has announced the third phase of Special Intensive Revision, or SIR. Moreover, this phase will cover 16 states and 3 Union Territories. The Commission said it designed the schedule around the ongoing house listing process under Census. Therefore, both exercises can move with better coordination.
The Commission will run this phase across Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, Punjab, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Delhi. In addition, the wider list includes 16 states and 3 Union Territories. The Commission says SIR aims to make voter lists more accurate and error-free. As a result, it expects stronger trust in the election process.
BLOs Will Check 36.73 Crore Voters
During this third phase, nearly 3.94 lakh Booth Level Officers will visit homes. Consequently, they will verify 36.73 crore voters. Additionally, 3.42 lakh Booth Level Agents appointed by political parties will support this process. The Commission has urged every party to appoint BLAs at each polling station. Therefore, the revision can become more transparent and participatory.
After this phase, SIR will cover almost the entire country. However, the Commission will leave out Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh for now. It will announce their schedule later. The Commission cited Census second phase work and weather conditions behind this timing. In particular, it mentioned hill and snowfall areas.
Earlier, the first two phases covered 13 states and Union Territories. During those rounds, officials checked nearly 59 crore voters. Moreover, more than 6.3 lakh BLOs and 9.2 lakh BLAs took part.
