Pakistan announced a sudden smart lockdown starting tonight at 8 PM across multiple regions. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took this decision after rising fuel shortages. Notably, this move followed disruptions caused by halted ship movement through the Hormuz Strait. Consequently, the government aimed to control energy usage and manage growing pressure.

Crisis Triggered by Hormuz Disruption

Since Iran stopped ship movement through the Hormuz Strait, fuel shortages increased across South Asia and Europe. Countries like India, Nepal, and Bangladesh took several steps to manage the crisis. However, Pakistan struggled to control the situation effectively. Therefore, authorities moved toward strict restrictions to handle shortages.

Government Decision and Areas Affected

Meanwhile, Shehbaz Sharif announced the decision after a meeting with chief ministers. The review meeting took place in Islamabad under his leadership. According to Pakistan Radio, authorities decided to close markets and commercial areas early.

The government ordered closures at 8 PM in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Islamabad Capital Territory, Gilgit-Baltistan, and POK. However, divisional headquarters in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will keep markets open until 9 PM.

Restrictions on Businesses and Events

Additionally, authorities ordered general stores, departmental outlets, and malls to shut by 8 PM. Meanwhile, bakeries, restaurants, and food outlets will close after 10 PM. Furthermore, marriage halls, tents, and event venues must also shut after 10 PM.

Moreover, officials banned wedding ceremonies in private homes after 10 PM. However, medical stores and pharmacies remain exempt from these restrictions. Therefore, essential health services will continue without disruption.

Public Transport Relief Measures

At the same time, Shehbaz Sharif announced relief for citizens in selected cities. Public transport in Gilgit and Muzaffarabad will remain free for one month. Importantly, the government will bear the entire cost of this initiative.

Implementation Timeline and Meeting Details

Authorities confirmed that these restrictions will begin immediately from Tuesday night. Therefore, the smart lockdown starts today at 8 PM across Pakistan. During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar attended discussions. Additionally, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and senior officials also participated.
