Tensions have increased in Saudi Arabia after an alleged Houthi attack attempt near Mecca. Saudi Arabia claimed that Houthi rebels tried a drone strike on the holy city. However, Saudi forces intercepted the drone before it could succeed. Now, reports indicate that the incident has increased Saudi Arabia’s concerns. Despite its financial strength, the country seeks support to counter Houthi drones and missiles.
According to two regional officials, Saudi Arabia faces shortages of missile defence weapons. The prolonged conflict with Yemen’s Houthi rebels has pushed Riyadh to seek assistance. The officials said Saudi Arabia requested air defence support from France, Britain, Pakistan and Egypt. These countries may help strengthen protection against aerial threats in the region.
Saudi Arabia Faces Defence Equipment Pressure
The requested assistance could help Saudi Arabia defend against missiles and drones from Houthis and other Iran-backed groups. One official explained the reason behind this move.
According to the official, the United States remains Saudi Arabia’s biggest ally and weapons supplier. However, America’s stock of missile interceptors has also reduced during its six-month war with Iran. The officials shared details anonymously because they lacked permission to speak publicly. Meanwhile, Saudi authorities have not issued a response regarding these claims.
Furthermore, the Saudi-Houthi conflict forms part of a wider confrontation that emerged after the Iran war. Saudi Arabia accused Houthis of attempting a drone attack on Mecca on Wednesday.
Saudi Arabia Protects Military And Oil Assets
One regional official said Saudi Arabia faces a difficult situation currently. The country must protect military bases, important government facilities and oil infrastructure.
Although allied nations offered diplomatic support, officials have not indicated any military assistance. Saudi Arabia continues assessing its security requirements amid rising threats.
US And Pakistan Respond To Situation
Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack attempt on Mecca. He said Pakistan stands with Saudi Arabia and supports the kingdom.
At the same time, the United States appears distant from the conflict. America has supplied Saudi Arabia with billions of dollars worth of weapons.
Additionally, the US has promised other forms of support. However, senior American officials have avoided direct involvement in the conflict.
Houthis Deny Targeting Mecca
Saudi Arabia described Mecca as its “red line” and said it stopped the drone. However, Houthi rebels denied targeting the holy city. Mecca lies around 1,100 kilometres away from Yemen’s border. The situation continues as Saudi Arabia reviews its defence needs.
