Bangladesh’s Tariq Rahman government has barred Indian budget airline SpiceJet from using its airspace. Moreover, authorities took this step due to pending payments. As a result, certain flights must now take longer routes.
Because Bangladesh airspace remains unavailable, some flights from Kolkata to Guwahati and Imphal follow extended paths. Consequently, flight duration and operational costs may increase.
SpiceJet Responds to the Restriction
On Thursday, February 19, a SpiceJet spokesperson addressed the issue. The airline said it remains in regular communication with relevant authorities. Additionally, discussions include navigation charges and operational procedures.
The spokesperson described the matter as an industry-related issue. Furthermore, the airline stated it works constructively toward a resolution. Scheduled flight services continue according to regulatory norms.
What About Pending Dues?
Sources indicated that Bangladesh imposed the restriction over unpaid dues. However, officials have not clarified the nature or amount of the outstanding payment. Therefore, precise financial details remain unavailable.
SpiceJet maintained that it continues operating all scheduled flights as per regulations. Meanwhile, passengers have not faced direct disruptions so far.
Despite that, certain flights now avoid Bangladeshi airspace. Consequently, they must adopt alternative and longer routes.
Operational and Market Impact
Flight tracking data shows that some SpiceJet services bypass Bangladesh airspace. As a result, these aircraft follow extended flight paths.
During afternoon trading on the BSE, SpiceJet shares slipped by nearly 1 percent. Additionally, the company recently reported a loss of ₹269.27 crore for the December 2025 quarter.
The airline attributed this loss to rising costs and one-time expenses. Therefore, the airspace restriction adds further operational pressure.
What Lies Ahead
SpiceJet continues engaging with concerned authorities to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, scheduled services operate under existing regulations. However, until the matter clears, certain routes will remain longer.
