Saharanpur Mosque Dispute Deepens as ASI Begins Probe After Hidden Well Discovery

A 20-foot deep well found beneath mosque demolition debris has triggered a historical inquiry, with ASI collecting samples to determine its age and origin.

A hidden well discovered after mosque demolition in Saharanpur has started a fresh investigation. The Indian Archaeological Survey (ASI) team reached the site and collected samples from the well. The team will examine the samples to determine the well’s age and historical background.

The well appeared beneath debris at the Saharanpur collectorate premises after demolition work. Officials found the structure around 20 feet deep and nearly 1.5 metres wide.

Historical Claims Trigger Administrative Action

Meanwhile, both sides have raised claims regarding the ownership and connection of the well. Therefore, the administration called the ASI team to conduct a detailed examination. After removing the debris, workers discovered the well beneath a slab.

The slab appeared during the cleaning process and workers cut it using a cutter. Officials believe the well existed before the mosque construction because the structure reportedly covered it later. However, the main questions remain about its exact age and builder. The ASI investigation may provide answers to these questions.

During the examination, the city magistrate also remained present with the ASI team. The magistrate had earlier issued the order connected with the mosque. Furthermore, authorities installed CCTV cameras around the well to protect evidence. The administration will monitor every activity near the site through the control room. This step aims to prevent any interference with available evidence.

Security Increased Around Investigation Site

Earlier, Saharanpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate Subodh Kumar reached the location after discovering the well. He informed ASI officials to study its history and antiquity. Additionally, authorities deployed police personnel at the collectorate premises. Officials have restricted public movement around the area.

The matter started after Bajrang Dal regional coordinator Vikas Tyagi filed a petition in 2025. He approached the city magistrate’s court and alleged that the mosque inside the collectorate premises was illegal. Subsequently, Saharanpur City Magistrate declared the structure illegal and ordered its demolition.
