Vinesh Phogat Cleared for Asian Games Trials, Supreme Court Raises Key Questions

Supreme Court allows Vinesh Phogat to participate in selection trials on May 30–31, 2026, while emphasizing national priorities

Indian freestyle wrestler Vinesh Phogat received permission to participate in Asian Games selection trials on 30–31 May. Moreover, the Supreme Court upheld Delhi High Court’s order allowing her participation. Furthermore, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) petitioned the Supreme Court challenging this decision.

Court Highlights Questions

During Friday’s hearing, the Supreme Court noted that Vinesh has many achievements but reminded her that the nation comes first. Additionally, judges questioned her absence from doping tests and her break on 14 December 2024. They also asked why she did not provide current activity updates. Consequently, Vinesh will need to address these questions in further proceedings on 1 June.

Lawyer’s Argument

Vinesh’s lawyer stated she only requested to attend trials. Moreover, she emphasized that Vinesh, who became a mother a year ago, only seeks the opportunity to compete. Furthermore, Vinesh had explained her prior absence by citing assembly duties, which the court did not fully accept.

Asian Games Selection Timeline

Supreme Court highlighted that the selection process for February 2026 Asian Games had begun. Vinesh did not participate in four required sports events initially. Therefore, her petition in May demonstrated recent initiative. Additionally, judges emphasized that sports in India connect to global athletics, and rules apply equally to all athletes. Finally, the court recognized Vinesh’s achievements but reinforced that the country’s interests take precedence over individual accolades.
