Sergio Gor’s Ladakh Visit Cancelled, US Envoy Heads Back to Delhi

The US ambassador’s planned Ladakh visit has been cancelled, after his Jammu and Kashmir meetings and Dal Lake shikara ride.

US Ambassador Sergio Gor’s planned Thursday visit to Ladakh has now been cancelled. Following this development, Gor will return to Delhi from Jammu and Kashmir, according to sources. He had travelled across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as part of his visit. Reports had earlier indicated a possible Line of Actual Control visit during his Ladakh trip. However, officials have not disclosed why authorities cancelled the Ladakh itinerary. Gor had reached Srinagar on Wednesday before beginning his Jammu and Kashmir engagements.

Gor meets Omar Abdullah before Dal Lake ride

Gor first met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at his residence in Srinagar. Afterward, Gor described Jammu and Kashmir as an integral part of India. He also said America would review its travel advisory concerning the region. Gor cited steps taken by the central government and Omar Abdullah toward greater safety. During their joint press conference, he called Jammu and Kashmir an important Indian region. He also praised its beauty and discussed America’s travel advisory review process. Gor said Washington regularly reviews such advisories, while avoiding any major announcement during his visit. He added that New Delhi, Omar Abdullah, and local administration had taken strong safety measures. Therefore, America will consider whether its travel alert level should decrease. Gor also said many Americans could want to visit Jammu and Kashmir. They could explore its beauty and learn about opportunities available there.

Later, Gor enjoyed a shikara ride across Srinagar’s famous Dal Lake. He boarded the traditional boat near Nehru Park and travelled around the lake for nearly one hour.
