Protests against reservation and debates over women’s reservation have created political challenges for parties. Meanwhile, voices against caste-based reservation have emerged across several cities.
Social media platforms and cities like Delhi, Lucknow, Patna and Jaipur have witnessed repeated protests. However, political parties remain cautious while discussing caste-based reservation issues.
At the same time, the BJP has targeted Congress over women’s reservation. Congress has questioned why the government has not implemented the law.
Protesters demand changes in existing reservation system
On Sunday, around 300 people gathered in Central Delhi against caste-based reservation. Later, police detained several protesters during the demonstration.
The protesters said they do not oppose reservation itself. Instead, they demanded reforms within the existing system.
According to one protester, support should reach economically weaker people from every community. They also demanded a creamy-layer rule and a review of the current structure.
Another participant said authorities should examine the system carefully. The aim should remain ensuring benefits reach people who genuinely need support.
Social media movement raises quota reform demands
The reservation reform campaign has created social media platforms to spread its message. The Instagram page of the Reservation Hatao movement has over 56 lakh followers.
YouTuber Ajit Bharti, who participates in the movement, demanded equal economic assistance for EWS communities. He compared support measures with benefits available for SC communities.
He suggested free coaching, free application forms, zero hostel charges and course fee support. Additionally, he demanded easier loan facilities where required.
Furthermore, Ajit Bharti supported a quota-within-quota system among reserved categories. He claimed many SC and OBC communities still receive limited benefits.
Through an X post, he also said one person and one family should receive reservation benefits only once.
Dalit leaders oppose reservation removal movement
Meanwhile, the government has not issued any response regarding these demands. However, Dalit leaders from government parties have opposed the movement.
Union Minister and LJP (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan strongly criticised calls to remove reservation. Union Minister and RPI president Ramdas Athawale also opposed the campaign.
Chirag Paswan said reservation is not charity but a constitutional right. He added that neither the Constitution nor reservation faces any threat while he remains alive.
