In a significant geopolitical move, Pakistan has opened six new land routes to Iran, bypassing the US-imposed naval blockade. This blockade, ordered by US President Donald Trump, targets Iranian ports and aims to restrict maritime trade. The blockade, which involves attacking and seizing ships linked to Iranian ports, has crippled Iran’s maritime trade and its access to global markets.
As a result, Iran has struggled to supply essential goods within its borders and to global markets. The blockade severely impacted Iran’s economy, leaving it unable to import or export crucial commodities. However, Pakistan’s timely intervention has provided Iran with an alternative lifeline.
Six New Land Routes to Iran
Pakistan has strategically opened six vital land routes to facilitate trade and supply between Pakistan and Iran. These routes will allow goods to be transported by road, circumventing the blockade. The new routes include:
- Gwadar to Gabd: This is the shortest yet most crucial route, cutting transit time by up to 87%.
- Karachi/Port Qasim to Lyari-Ormara-Pasni-Gabd: This coastal highway offers an alternative route for goods transit.
- Karachi/Port Qasim to Khuzdar-Dalbandin-Taftan: This traditional trade route connects Iran and Pakistan, used for decades.
- Gwadar-Turbat-Panjgur-Quetta-Taftan: Connecting the interior areas of Balochistan to Iran, this route is essential for cross-border trade.
- Gwadar-Lyari-Khuzdar-Quetta-Taftan: This route links ports to alternative highways, offering additional transit options.
- Karachi/Port Qasim-Gwadar-Gabd: This convenient route connects ports with the border, facilitating easier access for goods.
Strategic Shift in Geopolitics
Pakistan’s decision to open these new routes has weakened the impact of the US blockade. With the blockade intending to stop Iran’s imports and exports entirely, Pakistan has created a crucial lifeline for Iran. Geopolitical analyst Himanshu Jain highlighted this move as a pivotal moment. He noted that Pakistan legally circumvented the blockade, ensuring Iran could continue its trade.
Jain explained, “The game has changed. Pakistan broke through the US naval blockade just when Trump canceled the ceasefire talks and imposed new sanctions.”
