The Lok Sabha session  saw a heated exchange between Gaurav Gogoi and Kiren Rijiju. The no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla took center stage, and during the deliberations, Gogoi targeted Rijiju for his frequent disruptions of Opposition members. Gogoi accused Rijiju of regularly interrupting the Opposition, claiming that his actions were more disruptive than any previous minister in that role.

Rijiju had previously remarked that the Opposition had used “unparliamentary words” and that he would respond accordingly. Gogoi, in turn, responded by stating that historical records would reflect Rijiju’s tendency to interrupt more than any of his predecessors.

Amit Shah Defends Rijiju and Upholds Parliamentary Conduct

In defense of Rijiju, Union Home Minister Amit Shah strongly supported the need for parliamentary decorum. He argued that interruptions were essential to maintain order during parliamentary sessions. Shah explained that such interventions were necessary to ensure the Opposition adhered to the rules of the House. Shah also stated that during his tenure as Parliamentary Affairs Minister, similar actions were taken when the Opposition did not follow established parliamentary guidelines.

Shah labeled the Opposition as “irresponsible,” suggesting that their behavior was the root cause of Rijiju’s frequent interventions. He defended Rijiju’s actions, asserting that interruptions were necessary to maintain the integrity of the parliamentary process.

Gaurav Gogoi Emphasizes Motion to Protect House Dignity

Gogoi, while addressing the no-confidence motion, made it clear that the resolution was not a personal attack on Speaker Om Birla. Instead, he emphasized that the motion was brought forward to preserve the dignity of the Lok Sabha.

He reiterated, “This resolution aims to protect the House’s dignity, not target Om Birla.” The Opposition highlighted Speaker Birla’s alleged partiality, especially regarding Rahul Gandhi’s speech denial.

Congress MP Mohammad Jawed formally submitted the no-confidence motion, which gathered support from over 50 MPs. The motion reflected the growing concerns of the Opposition regarding Speaker Birla’s impartiality. However, the ruling party continued to defend Birla, emphasizing his fair handling of the House.

BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, chairing the session, announced 10 hours for the no-confidence motion debate. He urged members to remain focused solely on the resolution and avoid unnecessary disruptions. Pal also highlighted that the Speaker had granted permission for extensive discussions, allowing the Opposition to express their concerns.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, along with other BJP leaders such as Anurag Thakur, Nishikant Dubey, and Ravi Shankar Prasad, expressed their support for Speaker Birla. They emphasized that the Speaker had maintained impartiality and that the Opposition’s actions were unwarranted.

Claims of Misrepresentation During the Session

The Opposition continued to level accusations against Speaker Birla, citing a misrepresentation of an incident involving female MPs. While reading the motion, Jawed accused the Speaker of falsely claiming that female MPs had ill intentions toward the Prime Minister. This accusation added fuel to the Opposition’s argument for Birla’s removal.

The Ongoing Battle in Lok Sabha

The no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla remains a significant point of contention between the ruling party and the Opposition. Despite the government’s defense of Birla, the Opposition continues to push for accountability and transparency. With tensions running high, the outcome of the motion will likely shape future parliamentary proceedings. Both sides are preparing for a continued battle, with the Opposition calling for greater fairness in the House, while the government defends its Speaker.

The debate over the no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla has exposed deep political divisions in Parliament. While the ruling BJP continues to defend the Speaker, the Opposition insists on his removal due to alleged bias. The outcome of this motion will likely have lasting implications for the functioning of the Lok Sabha. Both sides refuse to back down, increasing tension in Parliament in the coming days.
