₹43 Lakh Every Day, Yet Salary Wasn’t His Biggest Paycheque: Inside N. Chandrasekaran’s Tata Sons Earnings

N. Chandrasekaran resigned as Tata Sons chairman today, bringing renewed attention to his ₹158.66 crore FY26 remuneration and reported daily earnings.

N. Chandrasekaran led Tata Group, one of India’s largest business conglomerates. Moreover, he ranked among India’s highest-paid corporate executives. He resigned from the chairman’s position today. Consequently, discussion around his earnings and net worth has intensified.

As Tata Sons chairman, Chandrasekaran earned through more than fixed salary. Company profits and linked commission also contributed significantly to his remuneration. During FY26, Tata Sons paid him ₹158.66 crore in total compensation.

Dividing that amount across 365 days produces an average of nearly ₹43.47 lakh daily. Therefore, his overall package attracted attention beyond the fixed-pay component.

According to Tata Sons’ FY26 annual report, Chandrasekaran received ₹17.97 crore through salary and other benefits. Additionally, profit-linked commission contributed another ₹140.69 crore. Thus, commission generated the largest portion of his total earnings.

His FY26 remuneration also exceeded the previous year’s ₹155.81 crore package. Overall, compensation increased by approximately 1.8% year-on-year.

From Tata Group Entry to Chairman’s Position

Natarajan Chandrasekaran joined Tata Group in 1987. Later, he became CEO and MD of Tata Consultancy Services. Subsequently, he assumed the executive chairman role at Tata Sons during 2017.

Throughout his Tata Group journey, Chandrasekaran worked extensively across technology and several emerging businesses. His responsibilities also covered airlines, electronics, semiconductors and other newer ventures.

However, his compensation structure remained especially notable because commission outweighed fixed remuneration. During FY26, salary plus benefits amounted to ₹17.97 crore.

Meanwhile, profit-linked commission alone reached ₹140.69 crore. Therefore, roughly 89% of his total remuneration came entirely from commission.

What Does the Annual Report Reveal About His Net Worth?

Despite widespread interest, Tata Sons’ annual report does not provide Chandrasekaran’s total personal net worth. Therefore, different estimates circulating online cannot reliably establish his actual wealth.

However, the annual report clearly records his official earnings from Tata Sons. According to that document, Chandrasekaran received ₹158.66 crore during FY26.

Thus, while his personal net worth remains unspecified, documented remuneration provides a confirmed earnings figure. His resignation today has now brought those numbers back into focus.
