‘The Kerala Story 2’ Gets Relief After Court Lifts Ban: When Will It Hit The Theaters?

High Court lifts the 15-day ban on 'The Kerala Story 2', allowing its release in theaters soon.

A major relief came for the makers of The Kerala Story 2 – Goes Beyond as the Kerala High Court lifted the ban. The movie, which had faced a 15-day release restriction, can now be released in theaters.

Court’s Decision to Lift the Ban

The Kerala High Court’s division bench ruled in favor of the film’s producers, staying the earlier order issued by a single bench. The bench heard the appeal from the producers, including Vipul Amrutlal Shah, and found the single bench’s decision to be questionable.

The division bench, consisting of Justices Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and P.V. Balakrishnan, granted a stay on the ban imposed on February 26, 2026. The film’s release was initially scheduled for February 27, 2026.

The Earlier Court Ruling

On February 26, 2026, Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas had ordered a 15-day ban on the film. He argued that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) did not follow guidelines while certifying the movie. He also claimed that the movie could disturb communal harmony and tarnish Kerala’s image.

The court asked the CBFC to reconsider the revision petitions within two weeks. Based on the film’s teaser and trailer, petitioners claimed that the movie posed a risk to social harmony.

Producers Urge for Immediate Release

The producers appealed against the court’s order, stating that delaying the release would cause significant financial damage. The film was set to release in over 1,800 theaters across India and 355 international centers. They argued that the film did not disrespect Kerala or any religion but depicted the story of a protagonist who moves forward after leaving the state.

Next Hearing Scheduled

The division bench, after listening to the arguments, decided to stay the single judge’s order. They scheduled the next hearing for two weeks from now.

Previous Controversies Surrounding the Movie

The Kerala Story had faced similar controversies in 2023. It had raised political debates due to its portrayal of “love jihad.” The sequel addresses similar issues, with its trailer sparking further political discussions. Producers defend the film, claiming it is based on real events and aims to raise awareness in society.
