Jantar Mantar protest: Supreme Court forms panel to probe police action

A five-member committee will examine allegations of excessive force during the July 20 student protest at Jantar Mantar.

The Supreme Court has formed a five-member committee to examine the July 20 student protest. The panel will investigate the police action during the demonstration at Jantar Mantar. Moreover, the court wants an impartial examination of the security response.

The committee will examine allegations of excessive force against protesters. These allegations involve police, paramilitary forces and other security personnel. The inquiry will focus on whether security personnel used more force than necessary.

The panel will also examine the reported use of pellet guns and tear gas during the protest.

Five-member panel includes former judges and senior officials

Justice R. Subhash Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge, will lead the committee. Justice Ravi Shankar Jha, former Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, joins him.

Justice Shalinder Kaur, a former Delhi High Court judge, also joins the panel. Former CBI Director Rishi Kumar Shukla will serve as another member.

Former Meghalaya DGP L R Bishnoi completes the five-member committee. Together, the members will examine allegations surrounding the security response during the student demonstration.

The Supreme Court’s committee will therefore investigate the allegations involving police, paramilitary forces and other security personnel.
