Large scale clean up covers major track areas
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi announced a major sanitation achievement on Sunday. Moreover, officials confirmed removal of 18,495 metric tonnes of waste. Additionally, the cleanup covered 123 locations along railway tracks across the city. Furthermore, authorities cleaned nearly half of Delhi’s railway track network.

Joint drive targets long standing waste problem
This initiative forms part of a joint sanitation drive with railway authorities. Moreover, Delhi has around 102.9 kilometres of railway tracks. Additionally, garbage accumulated over time due to indiscriminate dumping by nearby settlements. Therefore, this situation created sanitation challenges and affected the city’s image.
Significant progress achieved so far
So far, authorities have cleaned around 49.74 kilometres of railway tracks. Moreover, officials estimated total waste between 18,000 and 20,000 metric tonnes across identified sites. Additionally, Karol Bagh and Keshavpuram zones saw removal of around 4,100 metric tonnes. Furthermore, the City SP zone recorded 2,703 metric tonnes cleared.
Major site transformed into usable space
In Keshavpuram zone, authorities cleared a major legacy waste site near Azadpur Railway Station. Moreover, officials converted this area into a usable open space. Additionally, the civic body installed 61 twin dustbins along the railway tracks. Therefore, these steps aim to reduce further dumping.
Awareness efforts and future prevention plans
Alongside cleaning, authorities continue awareness campaigns to discourage open dumping. Moreover, officials promote responsible waste disposal practices among residents. Additionally, MCD commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar highlighted the importance of railway corridor cleaning. Furthermore, he stated that visible entry points into the city require priority attention.
Focus shifts to long term cleanliness
He added that progress achieved so far remains encouraging for future efforts. Moreover, authorities are removing legacy waste while strengthening infrastructure systems. Additionally, officials are increasing public awareness to prevent waste recurrence. Therefore, the initiative aims to ensure sustained cleanliness across railway corridors.
