India has responded to reports about Sheikh Hasina’s planned return to Dhaka. Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs said its position remains unchanged. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the issue on Tuesday, July 14. Furthermore, he said extradition matters involve legal processes and follow relevant laws.He stated, “Our position on this matter has not changed. Any matter related to extradition remains a legal issue and will receive treatment accordingly.”
Sheikh Hasina, aged 78, arrived in India after her government fell in August 2024. The collapse followed a major anti-government movement in Bangladesh.
Since then, she has stayed in India after leaving Dhaka during the political unrest.
Hasina Reportedly Plans Awami League Revival
According to PTI reports, sources close to Sheikh Hasina shared details last week. They said she plans to return voluntarily to Dhaka. Furthermore, the sources claimed she wants to reactivate her Awami League party. The plan has created discussions around her possible comeback.
However, India has maintained that legal procedures will guide any extradition-related matter. Meanwhile, Bangladesh has continued requesting Sheikh Hasina’s return from India.
Bangladesh Court Awarded Death Sentence In 2024 Case
Last November, a special court in Dhaka sentenced Sheikh Hasina to death. The court announced the decision in a case involving alleged crimes against humanity.
The case concerned the government’s alleged severe action during student-led protests in 2024.
After the verdict, Bangladesh repeatedly requested India to send Hasina back. Dhaka wants her to face legal proceedings.
Meanwhile, Awami League publicity subcommittee member Kazi Nasim Rupak supported her return. He said, “We are all ready to welcome our leader.”
Dhaka Welcomes Return Plan But Demands Legal Process
Bangladesh has welcomed reports about Sheikh Hasina’s possible return. However, Dhaka said she must face the judicial process. The country stated that Hasina should prove her innocence through legal proceedings. Additionally, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s adviser Zahid Ur Rahman commented on the matter. He suggested that Hasina should bring the world’s best lawyer with her.
