In the 69th IPL match, Mumbai Indians played Rajasthan Royals. A playoff spot was possible but their performance ruined chances. Following this defeat, batting coach Kieron Pollard admitted that captain Hardik Pandya did not meet the franchise’s expectations. Consequently, Mumbai Indians finished ninth on the ten-team points table after 14 matches.
Pollard Opens Up on Captaincy
Pollard discussed Pandya’s leadership, stating the season did not unfold as expected by the captain or management. In post-match talks with reporters, he said, “Leadership-wise things did not go Hardik’s way. However, we gave him the full opportunity to lead and succeed.”
He refused to blame a single player, emphasizing that the team’s failure was collective. Pollard added, “Sitting here blaming anyone is wrong. Hardik tried his best, we all did, but things did not favor us. Now, we need to learn from mistakes and review what could improve for the team. We hope to return stronger in the next 12 months.”
Future Decisions and Player Management
Regarding possible team changes, Pollard urged patience, warning against emotional decisions. He said, “It is not the right time to discuss. Every player and staff member needs time to understand deficiencies calmly. Hasty decisions would be irresponsible.”
Pollard also justified resting Jasprit Bumrah in the final league match, explaining it prioritized both team and Indian cricket interests. He added, “Bumrah always gives 100 percent. Since only two points were at stake, we considered his fitness and future. He remains a vital asset for Indian cricket, requiring careful decisions.”
