India and Russia have reached a significant defence understanding regarding long range missiles. However, officials have not announced the agreement formally yet. Meanwhile, reports suggest that both sides have finalised key aspects. Therefore, this move may strengthen India’s air capabilities significantly.
Deal Value And Missile Numbers
According to South China Morning Post, India agreed to purchase advanced air targeting missiles. Moreover, Russia approved export of 300 R-37M ultra long range missiles. Notably, this deal carries an estimated value of 1.2 billion US dollars. Meanwhile, this development comes amid rising coordination between Pakistan and China.
Range And Precision Capabilities
Russian sources describe R-37M among the longest range air to air missiles. Additionally, this missile offers an operational range between 300 and 400 kilometres. Therefore, forces can target early warning and tanker aircraft effectively. Furthermore, this system delivers high accuracy against enemy jets.
Speed And Deployment Advantage
Interestingly, this missile travels at nearly six times the speed of sound. Moreover, engineers designed it for launch from Su-30MKI fighter aircraft. Notably, this aircraft forms a key component of the Indian Air Force. Meanwhile, Russia used R-37M extensively during the Ukraine conflict. Consequently, its hypersonic speed makes interception extremely difficult.
Delivery Timeline And Indigenous Plans
Defence Security Asia reported that deliveries may begin within 12 to 18 months. Meanwhile, India continues developing Astra Mk 2 and Mk 3 missiles. Therefore, these indigenous systems may also become operational within a similar timeframe.
Strategic Impact On Regional Balance
According to Jagannath Panda, this missile balances Pakistan’s reliance on Chinese systems. Moreover, integrating R-37M with Su-30MKI expands engagement range significantly. Consequently, this upgrade may complicate Pakistan’s aerial strategies further.
