India continues to strengthen its naval capabilities. Today, the country celebrates the commissioning of the advanced stealth frigate, INS Taragiri. This indigenous warship, developed under Project 17A, will mark a significant milestone in India’s maritime defense strategy.
Strengthening Self-Reliance in Defense
INS Taragiri is the fourth frigate under Project 17A. It represents a significant leap towards self-reliance in defense. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, this warship uses over 75% indigenous materials. The ship was officially handed over to the Indian Navy on November 28, 2026.
Features of INS Taragiri
INS Taragiri is equipped with cutting-edge technology and deadly weapons. It houses the BrahMos supersonic missile, MF-STAR radar, and MRSAM air defense system. Additionally, the warship has 30mm and 12.7mm close-in weapon systems. For anti-submarine warfare (ASW), it includes rockets and torpedoes. These features significantly enhance the ship’s offensive capabilities.

With the induction of INS Taragiri, India’s naval power will grow even stronger. Its stealth technology allows it to strike undetected. This warship demonstrates India’s growing naval strength and reflects the country’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision. It signals to the world that India is becoming a dominant maritime force.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh’s Statement
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh attended the commissioning ceremony of INS Taragiri in Visakhapatnam. He highlighted the strategic importance of the ship for India’s eastern maritime sector. Singh further emphasized that this addition would enhance the combat readiness and operational capacity of the Indian Navy. Additionally, he noted that this event reinforces the goals of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
