BAFTA Awards 2026 honoured Manipuri-language comedy drama feature ‘Boong’ with Best Children’s and Family Film. This recognition created a landmark moment for Indian regional cinema. Moreover, the achievement brought pride not only to the creators but also to the nation. A local-language project earning global applause signals meaningful progress.

Excel Entertainment and Lakshmipriya Devi Lead the Triumph

Excel Entertainment, led by Farhan Akhtar, backed ‘Boong’ under its banner. Lakshmipriya Devi directed the film with clarity and conviction. Notably, this project became the first Indian nomination at BAFTA this year.

Subsequently, it secured the Best Children’s and Family Film honour. Clearly, storytelling strength and presentation impressed the international jury.

Emotional Acceptance on BAFTA Stage

When Lakshmipriya Devi reached the stage, Farhan Akhtar stood beside her. The moment carried deep emotion. She thanked BAFTA for recognising a small production with immense respect. She said, “Walking here felt like taking the final steps toward the peak of a mountain we never even knew we were climbing.” Her statement resonated strongly with the audience.

Victory Dedicated to Manipur

During her speech, she dedicated the award to her home state Manipur. She described the region as “overlooked and underrepresented” within India. She explained that the narrative unfolds against the backdrop of a troubled and neglected area. Furthermore, she expressed hope for peace returning to Manipur. Her heartfelt words moved many present there.

Powerful Story and Festival Journey

‘Boong’ follows a schoolchild living near the Manipur border amid ethnic tension. The young protagonist has faced violence and neglect since birth. Additionally, the narrative highlights social and political strain within the state. The child fights to reunite a fragmented family and bring back an estranged father.

Before winning at BAFTA, the film premiered in 2024 at the Toronto International Film Festival under the Discovery section. Later, organisers screened it at the Warsaw International Film Festival 2024, the 55th International Film Festival of India, and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2025.
