Mirabai Chanu won the first gold medal for India in weightlifting at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. She competed in the women’s 48-kilogram category and lifted a total of 190 kilograms, including 85 kilograms in snatch and 105 kilograms in clean and jerk. Additionally, she broke multiple Commonwealth Games records during her performance. Chanu’s victory marked India’s first gold and overall third medal at the event, inspiring teammates and the nation.
Rishikant Singh Triumphs Despite Injury
In the men’s 60-kilogram weightlifting category, Rishikant Singh earned a historic silver medal despite a knee injury. He lifted 121 kilograms in snatch, equaling the Commonwealth Games record, and initially led the clean and jerk. However, he managed only 143 kilograms in his final attempts, totaling 264 kilograms, which secured the silver medal. Malaysia’s Muhammad Anik Kasdan lifted 273 kilograms to win gold, and Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya claimed bronze with 260 kilograms.
Raja Muthupandi Shines in Debut
Raja Muthupandi made his debut memorable by winning silver in the men’s 65-kilogram category during the evening session. He lifted 126 kilograms in snatch and 160 kilograms in clean and jerk, totaling 286 kilograms. Malaysia’s Muhammad Aznil bin Bidin set a new record with a total of 299 kilograms for gold, while Papua New Guinea’s Moria Baru earned bronze with 282 kilograms.
Para Powerlifting Adds Bronze
Earlier, para powerlifter Zhandu Kumar secured a bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight category. Despite challenges, India’s medal tally now includes four medals, reflecting the nation’s growing strength in both weightlifting and para sports.
India’s Position in the Medal Table
After these victories, India ranks eighth in the 2026 Commonwealth Games medal tally. Australia leads with 33 medals, including 14 gold, eight silver, and 11 bronze. The combination of gold, silver, and bronze demonstrates India’s competitive performance at Glasgow.
