Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, a major crude oil tanker from Saudi Arabia safely reached Mumbai. Consequently, the arrival eased concerns regarding fuel supply disruptions in India. The Liberia-flagged tanker Shenlong (Suezmax) carried about 1,35,335 metric tons of crude oil. Additionally, Dynacom Tankers Management, an Athens-based company, operates the vessel.
Tanker Crosses Strait of Hormuz Safely
During regional tensions, the tanker successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz before arriving in India. Therefore, it became the first large crude carrier reaching India during the recent crisis. After arrival, the vessel docked at the Mumbai port. Subsequently, authorities will transport the crude oil to refineries located in the Mahul area of eastern Mumbai.
Temporary Tracking System Shutdown During Journey
According to sources, the tanker temporarily switched off its AIS tracking system for security reasons. This tracking technology usually displays a vessel’s location during sea travel. However, the tanker reappeared on tracking systems on March 9. Later, the ship safely reached Mumbai on March 11.
India Maintains Large Crude Oil Reserves
Meanwhile, the safe arrival of Saudi crude oil remains important for India during the Middle East conflict. The country relies heavily on crude imports from Gulf nations for energy needs. However, authorities advised citizens not to believe rumors about fuel shortages.
Oil Stock Available Across Multiple Sources
According to an ET report, India currently holds a significant reserve of crude oil and petroleum products. By March 2026, the country maintained more than 250 million barrels of oil. This volume equals nearly 4,000 crore liters of petroleum supply.
Strategic Reserves Can Meet National Demand
Experts explained that these reserves could support national requirements during emergencies. In such conditions, the available stock can fulfill demand for nearly seven to eight weeks. Additionally, this total reserve includes petroleum reserves, refinery stocks, and crude shipments moving toward India.
Strategic Oil Reserves Managed by ISPRL
India’s strategic crude oil reserves are managed by Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL). Therefore, the reserve system ensures energy security during uncertain global conditions.
