Petrol-Diesel Prices Surge Again: Rahul Gandhi Slams Government for Stealthy Burden on Citizens’ Pockets

Amid fourth hike in ten days, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge target Modi government for incremental fuel price increase strategy.

On Monday, 25 May, petrol and diesel prices increased again, marking the fourth hike within ten days. In Delhi, petrol rose by ₹2.61 to ₹102.12 per litre, and diesel climbed ₹2.71 to ₹95.20 per litre. Previously, 15 May saw a ₹3 increase, 19 May a 90 paise rise, and 23 May petrol and diesel increased 87 and 91 paise respectively.

Rahul Gandhi Attacks Government

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticised the government, accusing it of stealthily burdening citizens. He said the government raised fuel prices in installments to reduce public backlash. Gandhi added that he had warned about the economic storm earlier, but PM Modi remained preoccupied with elections. He posted on social media, “Inflation Man Modi raised petrol-diesel prices in stages so your pockets are silently cut.”

Mallikarjun Kharge Targets Inflation

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also attacked rising prices, unemployment, and inflation. On social media, he stated that the looting continues, noting this fourth hike in ten days. Kharge compared current petrol prices to UPA era increases, highlighting a 43.01% rise in petrol from ₹71.41 in 2014 to ₹102.12 per litre in 2026, and a 67.87% increase in diesel from ₹56.71 to ₹95.20 per litre.

Price Surge Across Major Cities

Fuel prices jumped in other metropolitan areas too. Kolkata saw petrol reach ₹113.51 and diesel ₹99.82 per litre. Mumbai recorded ₹111.21 petrol and ₹97.83 diesel, while Chennai reached ₹107.77 petrol and ₹99.55 diesel.
