Pat Cummins Faces Fine After Slow Over Rate in IPL 2026, Joins Long List of Penalized Captains

After Sunrisers Hyderabad’s loss to Gujarat Titans, BCCI imposes fine on Pat Cummins for slow over rate. He’s not the only one.

Pat Cummins, captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), received a fine after his team’s defeat to Gujarat Titans. The BCCI found him guilty of slow over rate, leading to a penalty. This fine is the first of its kind for Pat Cummins in IPL 2026. As per IPL rules, the fine for a slow over rate violation is a minimum of ₹12 lakh.

Interestingly, Pat Cummins is not the only captain penalized for this offense. Several others, such as Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill, Ajinkya Rahane, Hardik Pandya, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Axar Patel, have also faced similar fines in the past.

The Details of the SRH vs Gujarat Titans Match

In the IPL 2026 match, SRH, under Pat Cummins’ leadership, lost to Gujarat Titans by 82 runs. Gujarat Titans batted first, scoring 168/5 in 20 overs, thanks to strong performances from Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar. Sudharsan scored 61 runs, and Sundar contributed with 52 runs.

In response, SRH failed miserably, chasing down 169 runs. They were all out for just 86 runs in 14.5 overs. The SRH team could not even complete their full 20 overs. Gujarat Titans’ Kagiso Rabada and Jason Holder took three wickets each to dismantle SRH’s batting order.

IPL’s Slow Over Rate Rule

The slow over rate violation falls under IPL’s code of conduct, specifically under section 2.22. This rule ensures that teams bowl the required number of overs within the stipulated time. If they fail to do so, the captain is held accountable, and a fine is imposed. The rule aims to maintain the pace of the game and avoid unnecessary delays.

Pat Cummins’ fine reminds us of the importance of adhering to this rule in IPL 2026, with several other captains having faced similar consequences in previous matches.
