Nitish Kumar’s Red Carpet Toilet Sparks Controversy: Tejashwi Yadav Criticizes ₹7.41 Lakh Expenditure

RTI reveals a temporary VVIP toilet built for Bihar CM during Pragati Yatra cost ₹7.41 lakh, Tejashwi highlights public funds misuse.

RTI reveals that Bihar CM Nitish Kumar used a temporary VVIP toilet during Pragati Yatra in Rani Ganj, Araria, on 22 January 2025.
The structure included a urinal and lasted only for a few minutes of the program.
The total cost for this temporary facility reached ₹7.41 lakh, raising concerns about public fund usage.

How the Case Was Revealed

The expenditure became a matter of discussion after official approval of the VIP facility, attracting political attention.
The disclosure occurred when PHED engineer-in-chief Nityanand Prasad sent a detailed letter to the Comptroller on 2 June 2025.
The letter explained the fund allocation and withdrawal for the 2024-25 financial year regarding the temporary VIP toilet in Araria.
RTI information confirmed that the PHED spent ₹4,71,691 on the temporary toilet and urinal for the CM and guests.
This structure was removed after the program ended.
Now political parties like JD(U) and BJP may respond to this expenditure controversy.

Opposition Criticism

Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav criticized the decision on social media, calling it the “most VVVIP toilet” for brief usage.
He noted that ₹7.41 lakh could have constructed 37 permanent toilets for the underprivileged in Bihar’s most backward districts.
According to Yadav, a standard government allocation of ₹12,000 per toilet already suffers a 20% corruption margin.
Thus, this amount could have greatly benefited poor communities instead of funding a short-term temporary facility.

Public Debate and Reaction

The disclosure has sparked public debate over prioritizing citizens’ welfare versus temporary arrangements for high-profile officials.
Opposition leaders stress the need for long-term infrastructure rather than spending excessively on short-term VVIP comforts
