Mumbai Landslide Horror in Kurla: Six Dead as Rescuers Race Against Debris and Relentless Rain

A pre-dawn landslide struck Chirag Nagar after intense rainfall, leaving six dead while rescuers search for more people under debris.

Heavy rainfall triggered a major tragedy in Mumbai’s Kurla early Wednesday, August 12. A landslide struck the Chirag Nagar area during pre-dawn hours. So far, reports confirm six deaths from the incident. Meanwhile, authorities fear several others may remain trapped beneath debris. Rescue teams continue searching the site and removing people. BMC Mayor Ritu Tawde also reached the affected location.

The incident occurred at Gausia Chawl near Rathod Medical. After receiving information, emergency teams quickly reached the scene. Rescuers suspect several residents remain buried underneath rubble. So far, six people have died while operations continue. Teams are steadily pulling individuals from the debris. Meanwhile, a video showing the incident has also surfaced.

Mumbai received significant rainfall during the previous night. Consequently, part of a hill collapsed onto this Kurla chawl. According to BMC, officials received the landslide alert around 3:48 am.

Multiple Emergency Teams Join Rescue Operation

After learning about the disaster, BMC fire brigade teams immediately reached the location. Police personnel, electricity distribution staff, 108 ambulances, and ward officials also joined operations. Together, these agencies started relief and rescue work. Teams continue clearing rubble rapidly from the affected area. Authorities have also arranged complete hospital support for injured people.

DCP Ganesh Shinde provided another update on the situation. He said rain caused a landslide in Ashoknagar under Ghatkopar police jurisdiction. According to Shinde, teams had recovered two bodies at that stage. He added that rescue operations remained underway.

Shinde said police personnel had joined every necessary emergency team at the scene. BMC, NDRF, and officials from other agencies also participated. According to him, the incident occurred around 3 am.

NDRF Warning Continues as Mumbai Faces Yellow Alert

NDRF and administration teams had already visited such vulnerable areas before this incident. Officials regularly warn residents about possible dangers during heavy rainfall. Moreover, authorities urge people to remain alert or avoid living inside such houses.

However, people continue staying in these illegally constructed homes. Such structures lack sufficient strength during severe weather. Therefore, heavy rainfall can trigger collapses and lead to dangerous incidents.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department expects monsoon rainfall to continue across Mumbai. IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad. The warning covers heavy rainfall at some locations across these areas.

Additionally, rainfall across Mumbai’s suburbs crossed the 2,000 mm mark by Tuesday morning.
