Mohsin Naqvi’s ACC Future in Doubt After India’s Trophy Snub

After India’s men’s and women’s teams refused trophies from Mohsin Naqvi, questions rise over his ACC chairman extension.

Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi currently leads the Asian Cricket Council. His ACC chairman position has now attracted attention after India’s teams refused trophies from him. Earlier, India’s men’s team declined the Asia Cup trophy from Naqvi. The Indian women’s team also avoided taking the trophy from him after becoming champions.

Therefore, questions have emerged about whether Naqvi will receive an extension. His current term will end next year.

When Will Mohsin Naqvi’s ACC Term End?

Mohsin Naqvi became ACC president in April 2025. Before him, Sri Lanka’s Shammi Silva held this position. Earlier, Jay Shah served as ACC chairman before becoming ICC president. His tenure lasted around four years after members approved an extension. According to ACC rules, the chairman position follows a two-year rotation system. Naqvi’s term will end in April 2027.

Currently, he has around seven months remaining in his tenure. After that, members will select a new ACC chairman.

However, rules allow a chairman’s term extension. For this, the candidate needs support from ACC member countries.

Will BCCI Support Naqvi’s Extension?

The possibility of Naqvi receiving an extension depends on member support. Jay Shah’s example shows that extensions can happen with approval. Jay Shah received the responsibility in 2021. Later, members agreed to extend his term until 2024. Meanwhile, BCCI has not shared any official statement about Naqvi’s extension. The board has not confirmed its support.

However, recent events suggest that BCCI may not support an extension. Several other members also appear unhappy with Naqvi’s approach.

Naqvi’s Position Faces Tough Challenge

After the trophy presentation controversies, Naqvi’s extension appears difficult. The current situation does not indicate strong chances for another term. The ACC chairman decision will depend on discussions among member countries. Therefore, the coming months will decide Naqvi’s future in the council.
