The Malviya Nagar fire in South Delhi killed 21 people and shook the capital profoundly. Eyewitnesses described thick black smoke, forcing trapped guests to cling to balconies and windows. The blaze originated at Lemon Green in Restaurant and spread rapidly to the 5-floor Flourish Stay B&B hotel. Narrow staircases and a single exit worsened panic, prompting several residents to jump from windows. Local citizens risked their lives to rescue victims, breaking walls, placing mattresses, and performing CPR where necessary.
Many victims included foreign patients’ attendants staying at the hotel due to proximity to Max Hospital. The fire forced people unable to escape into bathrooms, where authorities later found several charred bodies. Residents expressed outrage over illegal operations, noting that the hotel ran 25 rooms despite licensing for only six.
Political Reactions and Visits
Political reactions poured in after the incident. CM Rekha Gupta visited the victims at hospitals 26 hours post-tragedy. Before her visit, Congress leader Devendra Yadav criticized the delay as insensitive. Delhi Deputy CM Parvesh Verma, former AAP CM Arvind Kejriwal, opposition leader Atishi Marlena, and AAP leaders Saurabh Bhardwaj and Somnath Bharti had yet to visit the site.
Meanwhile, Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood personally inspected the area, spoke with officials, and reassured citizens that authorities would investigate thoroughly. BJP MLA Satish Upadhyay met injured policemen at AIIMS Trauma Center, accompanied by Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh. Additionally, MP Manoj Tiwari visited the location, calling the incident “very tragic.” Congress leaders Devendra Yadav and Satya Sharma conducted separate site visits, raising concerns about administrative lapses, fire department response, and MCD involvement.
Oversight, Accountability, and Safety
Eyewitnesses stressed that rapid response and adherence to safety regulations could have saved lives. The delayed visits of several leaders raised questions regarding accountability and concern for affected families. Authorities and political representatives are now under scrutiny for both preventive measures and post-tragedy responsiveness.
Ongoing Relief and Investigation
Rescue operations continue, and hospitals like AIIMS Trauma Center, Max Saket, and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital are treating survivors. Local residents demand stricter enforcement against illegal hotels and proper licensing to prevent future tragedies. CM Rekha Gupta’s visit provides reassurance, but the absence of other prominent leaders remains a focal point of public criticism.
