Discussions continue over India’s next T20 captain after Suryakumar Yadav faced a possible drop due to personal performance. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson appear as leading contenders.
Former cricketer Ravi Shastri advocated for Sanju Samson in an ICC review. He emphasized Samson’s capability has existed from the beginning. Moreover, Shastri noted his current exceptional form could improve further over the next two to three years.
Shastri Highlights Captaincy Experience
Shastri also highlighted Samson’s previous leadership roles with Rajasthan Royals. According to Shastri, these experiences make him a strong candidate for T20 captaincy. He added that the final choice might depend on Suryakumar Yadav’s upcoming performance.
Shastri told Sanjana Ganesan during the ICC review, “India might search for a new captain until the 2028 T20 World Cup. However, Sanju Samson has shown strong leadership qualities and IPL captaincy experience.”
Performance and Consistency Make Samson Stand Out
Shastri emphasized that Samson’s batting position and aggressive style strengthen his case. Furthermore, he stated that consistency is no longer a concern, as recent performances reflect maturity and reliability.
According to Shastri, fans previously questioned Samson’s capability because they believed he had not fulfilled his potential. Now, strong T20 World Cup performances and this IPL season reinforce his candidacy. He concluded that Samson is a clear and strong candidate for future India T20 captaincy.
