Farmers in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, have developed a unique solution to protect their crops from monkeys. In Firozpur village, several farmers have begun dressing up as bears and patrolling their fields. Their goal is to scare off monkeys that frequently invade farms, causing extensive damage to crops.

Monkeys have been destroying crops like potatoes and strawberries, causing repeated losses for farmers who depend on these crops for their livelihood. To tackle the menace, farmers have resorted to dressing as bears, believing that the animals will be frightened away.

The Monkey Menace in Sambhal

Dharambir, a local farmer, shared his experience of the ongoing issue. He said that monkeys frequently destroy his crops, along with those of other farmers. “Monkeys eat potatoes and strawberries from our fields. More than 100 monkeys invade our farms daily,” Dharambir said.

He explained that the farmers have adopted the bear costume method as a temporary solution. “The monkeys run away when they see us dressed like this. But this is not a permanent solution,” he added.

While this method has worked temporarily, Dharambir emphasized that a long-term solution is essential to protect the crops.

Manoj Kumar, the local Forest Ranger, weighed in on the situation. He stated that chasing monkeys away is only a short-term solution. “Monkeys may run from one area, but they will move to another. This is not a lasting solution,” Kumar said.

The Forest Department is looking into more permanent measures. Kumar mentioned that they are working on capturing the monkeys and relocating them to forest areas. “Concrete steps will be taken to catch and release the monkeys,” he explained.

A Growing Problem

The monkey problem in Sambhal has worsened over time. With large numbers of monkeys regularly invading the farms, the damage to crops has been significant. Potatoes and strawberries, which are essential crops for the local economy, are being consumed by the monkeys.

Farmers have been trying various solutions, but the issue persists. The use of bear costumes has provided some relief, but the farmers and authorities know that more needs to be done.

The Forest Department’s Plans

The Forest Department’s approach to solving this issue involves more than just chasing the monkeys away. It is essential to prevent the monkeys from causing further damage to crops. As the Forest Department plans to relocate the monkeys, farmers are hopeful that the solution will help them preserve their crops.

While this temporary method has worked for now, the situation continues to highlight the need for effective wildlife management and strategies to address the increasing conflict between animals and farmers.
