AC Blast Alert in Delhi: CTI Issues Advisory Amid Rising Heat

CTI warns Delhi traders of potential AC explosions, urges immediate servicing to prevent accidents after recent fatal incident

Delhi’s soaring temperatures and continuous AC use raise safety concerns. Consequently, Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) issued an alert for traders. Moreover, CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal wrote letters to all 768 market associations and 56 industry associations, advising them to inspect AC units immediately.

Recent Fatal AC Incident

A retired IAS officer died recently due to an AC blast in Hauz Khas. Therefore, this event alarmed the entire business community. Furthermore, CTI stressed that while such incidents are rare, their consequences are extremely dangerous, and negligence must be avoided.

Five Key Causes of AC Blasts

CTI highlighted five main causes for potential AC explosions:

  1. Refrigerant Gas Leak and Sparks: Leaks in R32 or R290 plus sparks can trigger blasts.
  2. Incorrect Gas Filling: Using unsuitable or cheaper flammable gases risks compressor explosions.
  3. Compressor Overheating: Dirty filters, blocked coils, or low gas can heat compressors above 200°C.
  4. Electrical Faults: Loose wiring, faulty capacitors, or voltage fluctuations may cause short circuits and ignite gas.
  5. No Proper Vacuuming: Air remaining during gas filling mixes with oxygen, potentially causing blasts.

Safety Measures for Traders

CTI advised traders to follow strict safety steps:

  • Always hire certified, experienced technicians and obtain proper bills.
  • Evacuate gas entirely before repairs or welding on R32/R290 AC units.
  • Keep flammable materials, waste, or oil away from outdoor units.
  • Shut off units immediately with MCB if unusual noises, burning smells, or ice formation appear.
  • Avoid saving a few hundred rupees at the cost of lives or property.

Electricity Department Alert

Moreover, Delhi’s power department issued warnings about potential overloads. CTI requested all market and industry associations to share this advisory and promote awareness about regular AC maintenance. Consequently, trader safety becomes the top priority during this extreme heat period.
