Assembly Election Results Live: BJP’s 46-Year Rise Nears A New Peak As Bengal Win Expands Its Rule Over India

With leads in Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry, BJP and NDA look set to expand beyond 21 governments and deepen control over India’s population map.

Opposition parties struggle to protect their standing in West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry. Meanwhile, BJP’s wave dominates the trends. Bengal shows BJP near 195 seats. Assam shows BJP near 79 seats. Therefore, these results could expand BJP’s national power further.

BJP came into existence nearly 46 years ago, on April 6, 1980. Today, the party governs more than half of India’s population. Moreover, these election wins could increase its reach again. So, the main question now concerns BJP’s state count and population control.

Three States Show BJP And NDA Ahead

According to trends till 3 pm on May 4, 2026, BJP and NDA held clear leads. They moved ahead in three states or Union Territories. In West Bengal, counting continued on 294 seats. The majority mark stood at 148. By 3 pm, BJP led on 193 seats. Meanwhile, ruling TMC led on 95 seats. Thus, Bengal pointed toward BJP’s historic breakthrough.

In Assam, BJP held a strong position. The state has a 126-seat Assembly. BJP led on 79 seats there. Also, the party maintained strength from the beginning. With this win, BJP moves toward its third straight Assam government.

In Puducherry, the Assembly has 30 seats. A party or alliance needs 16 seats for majority. Here, the ruling AINRC-led NDA moved quickly toward another government. Early trends showed the alliance ahead on 11 seats. BJP also forms part of this alliance.

Tamil Nadu And Kerala Show Different Battles

Tamil Nadu gave BJP a different challenge. Here, BJP contested 27 seats with AIADMK. However, the main fight remained between ruling DMK and Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. From early trends, TVK created surprise with leads on 106 seats.

Kerala has traditionally given BJP limited space. However, early trends showed the party leading on some seats. These included Nemom and Palakkad. Therefore, these numbers gave BJP a positive signal. Still, Kerala’s main contest stayed between LDF and Congress-led UDF.

NDA Could Move Beyond 21 Governments

Before these five elections, NDA governed 21 states and Union Territories. Now, BJP’s biggest and most historic gain came from West Bengal. For the first time, BJP has moved toward power in this state. Therefore, this result marks a major expansion.

NDA also retained power in two other places. BJP won Assam for a third consecutive time. Meanwhile, in Puducherry, AINRC-led NDA returned toward power. All India N.R. Congress leads that alliance. As a result, BJP’s ruling map now grows further.

Population Reach Could Grow Sharply

These results may sharply increase BJP’s share over India’s governed population. Before the elections, BJP directly or indirectly ruled states with nearly 70% of India’s population. This remained true till April 2026, even after Bihar’s recent political change.

By early May 2026, BJP-led NDA ruled 21 of India’s 31 states and Union Territories. Before these polls, large states like West Bengal and Tamil Nadu stayed with opposition parties. West Bengal alone has more than 10 crore people. Therefore, BJP’s expected Bengal win carries huge demographic weight.

After these results, BJP will govern West Bengal for the first time. Also, Puducherry’s alliance return and Assam’s retention will strengthen its population base. Bengal’s likely win will deepen BJP’s position in eastern India, where it earlier remained weaker. Similarly, Assam’s third straight win will tighten its grip in the Northeast.

Overall, BJP’s national dominance will grow after these outcomes. Moreover, this wider NDA base could give a major boost before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. NDA’s broad population reach mainly comes from control over major states. These include Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh.
