Trinamool Congress leader and MP Abhishek Banerjee has received major relief from Calcutta High Court. The matter concerns his alleged objectionable remark against Union Home Minister Amit Shah. For now, the court directed police not to take punitive action against him. However, the bench also expressed displeasure over his statement.
Court Questions The Remark
The court made strong observations over remarks like “Delhi’s Godfather.” This case relates to a statement during an election rally. Abhishek Banerjee allegedly used objectionable words against Amit Shah there. After that, police registered an FIR against him. Banerjee then approached the High Court and sought its cancellation.
Custodial Questioning Not Needed
During the hearing, the court said police do not need custodial questioning right now. Therefore, it stopped any harsh action against Abhishek Banerjee until July 31. This order gives him temporary protection in the case. Still, the court did not stop the investigation.
Foreign Travel Faces Restriction
Along with relief, the court imposed several conditions on Banerjee. It clearly said he must fully cooperate with the investigation. Moreover, he must respond to any notice sent by police. The court also directed that he cannot leave India without its permission.
Probe Will Continue
The judge ordered the investigating officer to continue the case probe. According to the court, bringing out the truth remains necessary. Additionally, police can inform the court if Banerjee does not cooperate. Thus, the relief comes with strict legal conditions and continued scrutiny.
