France has now raised strong objections to the Iran-US temporary agreement. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that the deal must satisfy France before approval. He also emphasized that France cannot be excluded from the negotiation process.
Additionally, Barrot warned that key concerns must enter formal discussions. He specifically highlighted Iran’s ballistic missile program and proxy group support. Without these issues, he said lasting peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved.
UN Veto Warning and France’s Role
Moreover, France stressed its influence within the United Nations system. Barrot stated that if France remains unsatisfied, it will use its veto power in the UN Security Council. He further claimed that no UN decision can move forward without France’s position.
Therefore, any proposal to lift sanctions on Iran may face direct opposition. The French government argues that sanctions relief must reflect broader security concerns.
Context of Ongoing Regional Tensions
Meanwhile, the statement comes during rising tensions over the Iran deal. Israel has already complicated the negotiations in recent developments. Reports also noted cancellation of a US-Iran meeting after Israeli military activity in Lebanon.
Furthermore, Barrot called for large-scale dialogue to ensure peace in the Middle East. He insisted that excluding missile and proxy issues would block regional stability efforts.
US Position on Missile Restrictions
On the other hand, US President Donald Trump defended his stance on missile limits. He said restricting Iran’s missile development would be unfair. He also pointed out that neighboring countries like Saudi Arabia and Turkey possess weapons.
Additionally, Trump stated Iran currently holds no ballistic missiles. He added that Iran can develop them without opposition from the US. He emphasized respect for national sovereignty in such decisions.
