US President Donald Trump recently claimed that the Hormuz Strait has reopened under a new agreement. He further stated that the route would operate as a toll-free passage. Additionally, he described it as a major breakthrough after months of conflict. However, Iran has now issued a contrasting response to this claim. Tehran clarified that no toll system will operate on the Strait. At the same time, it confirmed that service-based fees may still apply.
Tehran replaces ‘toll’ with service-based charges
According to Iran’s position, charging tolls on Hormuz shipping movement is not legally valid. However, it stated that fees for services could still be collected. Moreover, Iran has redefined the concept by replacing toll terminology with “service fees.” NYT reported that Iran views toll collection as unlawful under international law. Even so, Tehran has not clearly explained which services would generate charges. Before the US–Iran conflict, no such charges existed on the route.
Trump reiterates strategic importance of Hormuz deal
On Sunday, 14 June, Trump announced that the Hormuz Strait had reopened. He also claimed that the passage would remain toll-free under the agreement. Furthermore, he said the deal protects one of the world’s most critical energy corridors. In an interview with The New York Times, he emphasized reduced war risk. Additionally, he stated the agreement ensures long-term open access to the route. According to the report, he called it a permanent toll-free arrangement.
Uncertainty grows over global energy route
Despite these statements, Iran’s response has created fresh uncertainty over Hormuz operations. The contrasting positions have left the toll-free claim unclear in practice. Consequently, questions remain over possible fee structures in the region. If Iran enforces service charges, global energy supply chains could be affected. Moreover, analysts warn it may set a concerning precedent for maritime routes. Trump earlier described the deal as ending naval blockades and restoring stability.
