Sources reveal Sayani Ghosh, a prominent TMC MP from Jadavpur, joined a rebel faction including 20 Lok Sabha members. The rebel group also counts Sudip Bandyopadhyay among its members.
Additionally, two Rajya Sabha MPs, Sukhendu Shekhar Roy and Sushmita Dev, resigned, intensifying the party crisis.
TMC Faces Deep Organizational Challenge
After losing power in Bengal, Mamata Banerjee faces her toughest period, struggling to stabilize both party and organization. Former loyalists now oppose her leadership, leaving the party vulnerable and politically weakened.
Previous Internal Rebellion Context
Earlier, Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha were expelled due to anti-party activities, leading Ritabrata to form a rebel group with 58 MLAs. Despite staying formally in TMC, these MLAs acted independently, setting the stage for parliamentary-level defection.
Secret Meetings and Strategy
Senior TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh led several MPs to meet at Bhupendra Yadav’s residence, with Bengal CM Shubhendu Adhikari present. Following this, they submitted a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, signed by 20 MPs, claiming formation of a separate faction.
Impact of Rajya Sabha Resignations
Sukhendu Shekhar Roy resigned on 8 June while Mamata attended the INDIA Bloc meeting in Delhi, delivering a direct shock to her. Two days later, Sushmita Dev resigned, demonstrating the ongoing erosion of TMC’s parliamentary strength.
These resignations reveal that TMC’s internal cohesion is rapidly weakening, signaling potential challenges ahead for Mamata Banerjee’s leadership.
