Now WhatsApp also allows users to set usernames for their accounts. Therefore users can share usernames instead of phone numbers for communication. Users Can Reuse Existing Usernames
Moreover users can use their Facebook or Instagram usernames on WhatsApp. For this process users must claim the username through the account center. However if another user already takes that name then it becomes unavailable. In that case users must choose a different unique username.

First open WhatsApp and go to the profile page. Then tap on the username tab visible on the screen. After that enter the desired username and submit it. If the username remains available then users will get it instantly.
Limited Rollout for Now
Currently WhatsApp has not released this feature for all users. Reports indicate that selected Android and iPhone users received access. Meanwhile the feature remains in its early rollout stage. After testing and improvements WhatsApp will expand it to all users. This process may take some time.
