In his speech, delivered in the Rajya Sabha on March 24, 2026, he highlighted the challenges the country faces. He discussed issues related to gas and oil supplies, security concerns for Indian nationals in Gulf nations, and the broader economic impact of the conflict.
Rising Tensions and Energy Shortages
PM Modi explained that the conflict in the Middle East had introduced unexpected challenges for India. As oil trade routes and gas supplies are affected, the country faces rising difficulties. He mentioned that over one crore Indians live in Gulf countries, making their safety a top priority for the government. He also addressed the worsening situation with the oil supply, especially from the Hormuz Strait, a key shipping route.
India’s Stance on the Hormuz Strait
Modi expressed India’s firm stance on the blockage of the Hormuz Strait, calling it unacceptable. The government has been in constant contact with Iran, the US, and Israel to open the Strait. Modi reiterated that commercial ships and oil supply routes must remain unimpeded. India’s government is working diligently to ensure that oil and gas supplies continue despite the ongoing crisis.
Peaceful Solution through Dialogue
Modi emphasized that India advocates for peace through dialogue. He stated that the crisis impacts human lives and humanity, and India’s efforts focus on encouraging a peaceful resolution. Modi also mentioned that, since the war began, over 3.75 lakh Indians have been safely returned. Furthermore, more than 1,000 Indians from Iran, including over 700 medical students, have been safely evacuated.
Ensuring Safety of Indian Nationals Abroad

The government is focusing on increasing domestic LPG production and speeding up the process of providing PNG connections to households.
Strengthening Self-Reliance for Future Sustainability
PM Modi stressed that India must become more self-reliant, especially in energy. To reduce reliance on foreign imports, the government has launched a major campaign to build indigenous ships. India’s reliance on foreign vessels for trade is significant, with over 90% of trade occurring through these vessels. The government’s new initiative aims to bolster the domestic shipping industry with an investment of approximately ₹70,000 crore.
